Extensive foreign experience demonstrates ways how to improve the existing unsatisfactory status of hospice care for dying and their families. This issue attracts increasingly the interest of specialists and of the public, giving us hope that it will be possible to achieve positive changes also in our country.

Fundamental improvement in the care for the dying never was achieved by a small group of specialists anywhere in the world. On the contrary, it requires the support of general public and development of various forms of voluntary work.

Quality care for dying therefore assumes, on the one hand, certain maturity of the society as well as willingness of people not to avoid questions of suffering, dying and death; on the other hand, experiencing dignified quality care for the dying contributes to the cultivation and freedom of the society. Palliative (hospice) care, not aimed primarily at cure but at the quality of the life of patients, should therefore contribute by no small part to the cure of society and improve human relationships.
